USA Today
Jay Fagoust came in to talk to us about his job at USA Today. It was an unplanned meeting but it was interesting to meet him. Jay Fagoust graduated from NCCU some time in the 90's and he told us a little about his life. Just like other guests speaker he stressed the importance of internships and how we need to do them. He explained his role at USA Today and how his job goes from day to day. He didn't look like he worked at USA Today by the way he was dressed, but I guess that's what happen when your caught off guard.
Spectacular Magazine
Phyllis Cooley is the creator and owner of Spectacular Magazine. Spectacular Magazine is a local paper form Durham NC. The magazine is designed for the community and Ms. Cooley lets the community submit stories. Ms. Cooley told us that she doesn't sale her cover because her cover are for people that does things and need to be recognized. She said that her cover had no price to it and she made that clear. She also told us how important deadlines are, and how things work on a certain schedule. She told us that her goal is to reach and give hope and empower her community, which I found nice. It's nice to know that there are people that still care about their community and still has integrity.

Bio
It took a lot out of me to write my bio because I went through a lot of things as a child. I won't get into it up here, but I glad that we recieved this assignment because it helped me relieve somethings and come to a understandings with my past. So all in all I'm glad we did this.
Obituary
When I was told of the assignment to write our own obit's I was kind of freaked out. I mean I don't want to think about dying at this stage of my life. After I sat down and started to think of all the things I really want to do before I die it hit me that I need to start reaching for those goals that I have set for myself. I want to do a lot and it will take time, but if I strive for it then I know I will be able to achieve them. After I finished my obit I felt relieved and now it's like I have my whole life in front of me on a piece of paper, and it's up to me to put everything in motion.

WES HOHENSTEIN

Wes Hohenstein gave our class a visit on Wednesday. He is the Chief Meteorologist for NBC 17 here in North Carolina. During his visit he talked to us about his college life and how he was hoping to become a doctor. After his Freshman year he decided to change his major. He kept expressing that he was very knowledgeable of math and science and how he didn't want to let that go to waste so he decided to use in pursing his new dream. Wes attended St. Louis University and during this time he also talked about the internship he did at NBC right down the street. Right out of college he told us about the jobs he had. One was in Louisiana, Houston, and his present job in North Carolina. Wes also talked about the DTV transition, and how the government had to push the date back to June 12th because not everyone was ready for the switch. All in all Wes visit was a very good one. The thought of being a meteorologist never crossed my mind before, and now I will give it some more thought. Good stuff!

CAPSTRAT
During class on Wednesday we had two visitors come and talk to the class. They were from Capstrat a communications agency in Raleigh, North Carolina. Tiffany Lawrence was on of the guest and she is the Talent Manger for the company. She told us what Capstrat does and who some of their clients are. She gave us some background information about herself and how she started out a biology major in school, but realized that she didn't really know what she wanted to do. The next guest was Louise Warenda. She is the Office Manager at Capstrat and she also gave us some information about the company. She told us about the internship that they have there and about how many interns they except each term. Over all it was a good listen and I am very interested in learning more about the company as well as doing an internship there.
SUPERBOWL 2009 !!!!

This past Sunday was the superbowl; Cardinals Vs. Steelers. The Steelers won the superbowl 27-23. During the first quater the steelers were up a field goal and the touchdowns came in the second quater. James Harrison sets a new superbowl record for running the ball back for 100 yards and making a touchdown. In the last 40 seconds Ben hit Santonio Holmes with the game winning pass that lead to the Steelers victory.
Jennifer Hudson made her comeback to the spotlight singing the National Anthem. Although it was very clear that she had pre recorded her vocals, meaning she was not singing live, it was good to see her out again after the murders that claimed her family lives.

ERICA MCRAE
During the class we had a fellow student come by to talk to us. Erica seems like she has a bright future ahead of her. She talked about how she transferred schools and how she is starting her own entertainment company. Her visit was very inspiring and helpful to me. After her visit I started to rethink me t shirt line that I was trying to start during the summer, and now I am going to go at it full force. The only thing I can do is try so that's what I am going to do!

THE INAUGURATION!!!

Today Barack Obama era as the 44th President began at 12:00pm. Although he didn't his oath until a couple minutes after 12pm, the Amendment states that the new president assumes the role as president at 12 noon. Everyone looked so happy hopeful. I watched it on CNN and they were on top of their stuff. They gave fun facts and keep the viewers updated through out the show.
The First Lady and Jill Biden were dressed very well. Some say that Mrs. Obama was over dressed and stuff, but I think she looked great. She's the First Lady, she had to make sure no one out shined her.
When the camera kept cutting to Bush's face he look like a huge weight was being lifted off of his shoulders. He look like he was very relived to be passing the torch.
,
During the reading of the oath there was a little mix up between Obama and the Chief Justice, but they worked it out. Obama look as if he wanted to start laughing though. When Obama gave his speech he just reassured me that my vote was the right vote. He told America that it would not be easy and it would be hard work to get everything good again , but he said that we can do it. He didn't stand up there and lie to us he was straight forward and that's what I like about Obama. During his speech he was taking jabs at Bush and they way he ran America over the last 8 years. That was funny to me.
All in all a good watch, but not everything was good lol. The lady that read that poem could of been dropped from the itinerary and Aretha Franklin ( I like her) but she tried to put to much soul on My Country Tis of Thee lol and you could not understand what she was saying half the time. Beyonce did a great job singing At Last for the Obama's First dance.
The Price of Freedom
In 1993 WTVD News did a special on MLK Jr. They talked about the struggles that blacks still faced in education and other things. They talked about how unemployment rates became higher from the 60's to the 90's and they talked about how the people at the round table reached their positions that they held at the time. We didn't get to finish the video, but from what I saw a lot of what they were talking about is still relavent today. Maybe not to the extent that it was back then, but there is still people struggling to find jobs and people still struggling with racism.
Bryson Pitts
During the TABS Banquet a man by the name of Bryson Pitts gave a very interesting speech. He talked about Barack Obama and what would happen if Barack won the Presidentcy. He touch on some vailed points about why people where voting for Obama and how it should not have taken a black man to run for president to get black people believing in themselves. I have met a lot of people that said they only voted for Obama because he's black and to me that's ok. They voted for him for their reasons, but I know I voted for him because I believed in what he was talking about and everytime he gave a speech it just grabbed me and made me believe.
Pitts talked about how blacks should not look at Obama and expect things to start being handed to them, instead they should continue to work hard and prove themselves.
Yes Barack is an inspration and a public figure or role model for young black to look up too but they should also realize that they have to continue to work hard and that's what Pitts was trying to say in his speech.

WHY I'M I HERE
The reason I decided to take Mass Media was because it was required in order to graduate. I also wanted to network and learn more about the course and what it has to teach me.
